DOE: 232 MW additional capacity, 120 MW BESS eyed in 2025 for Mindanao

THE DEPARTMENT of Energy announced an additional 232 megawatts capacity to stabilize the Mindanao grid in 2025.

Mark Christian Marollano, DOE Electric Power Industry Management Bureau supervising science research specialist, said this is a mix of oil-based plant type and renewable energy.

During the “Power 101 Series: Energy Security in Times of La Niña and El Niño” at Seda Hotel BGC, Taguig, on April 22, Marollano said 56 MW or 24% will be coming from oil-based or conventional energy while 176 MW (76%) are from RE.

RE will consist of hydropower (48 MW) and 128 MW from solar-powered plants.

As of March 2025, DOE List of Private Sector Initiated Power Projects, 0.180 MW from rooftop solar projects is in the line for commercial operation.

Meanwhile, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 120 MW capacity will be added to the grid.

As of January 2025 list of upcoming generation facilities for Mindanao, Aurora BESS (20 MW) is up for commercial operation in April is the most recent.

Tagum BESS (20 MW) and Maladugo Hydroelectric Energy Project (HEPP) with 8.4 MW are targeted for June.

The Sangali BESS with 20 MW; Apo Agua HEPP (2.424 MW) and Mangima HEPP with 1.2 MW are eyed for September.

Sangali diesel powered plant Phase 1 with 28 MW is targeted in October while the second phase with additional 28 MW is targeted in December.

For November, 19 MW is eyed with the operation of Malitbog HEPP, Silo-o, Mat-I, and Clarin.

Pitogo BESS with 60 MW; Gakaon HEPP (2.23 MW); General Santos solar-powered plant (SPP) (120 MW); Butuan City SPP (8 MW); Tinunod (3.6 MW) and MW Phinma Solar PVs (0.18 MW) is targeted in December.

The report considered 2025 committed projects which have already secured firm financial closing, in the construction stage and have been awarded the Green Energy Auction.

However, there are no listed transmission projects in Mindanao committed for 2025.

Marollano said this is still subject for changes upon revalidation in case of adjusted timeline.
