THE DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XI temporarily suspended all trekking activities conducted at Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) from March 20 to March 31 through Protected Area Management Board Executive Committee Resolution No. 1, series of 2024.
In an advisory released through their social media page, DENR XI said the suspension relates to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon that led to a “prolonged dry spell affecting the trekking and camping sites within MANP.”
“This precautionary measure is essential to mitigate the risk of bushfires and ensure the well-being of the park’s diverse ecosystems. The decision to resume activities will be carefully considered based on the assessments and recommendations provided by the MANP Protected Area Management Office of both Region XI and Region XII,” the advisory mentioned.
Paul Rodney Arbiol, DENR XI PAMB-MANP Development Management Officer, said protection against a fire incident in MANP is a year-round and collaborative effort by other agencies located in the region.
“We establish fire lines in different areas in case a fire occurs in Mt. Apo so that we can easily contain the areas initially burned. Our local government units have also exerted efforts to raise awareness in nearby communities,” Arbio said.
He said creating a bonfire in campsites is strictly prohibited inside the area.
Arbiol said according to their monitoring, the most recent forest fire encountered by MANP was eight years ago, wherein a butane canister was allegedly left unnoticed during a campsite.
The office also monitors agricultural burning in lower areas as it may cause a fire.
“Our local offices were also on standby to help us in case an incident would happen,” he added.
The advisory also urged adventurers who have made reservations during the affected dates, were asked to reach out to their respective local organizers to arrange alternative schedules for excursions.
