DCWD taps students to become climate-resilient pioneers

ALMOST 50 junior high students from six schools attended the Davao City Water District’s (DCWD) 2024 Water Convention on Nov 26 at the SM Annex Event Center to educate them about climate-resilient water service and ensuring water resource sustainability in Davao City.

“Educating them [participants] kung unsa ang atoang abundance in supply and measures that we have to ensure water quality. We will be able to influence them to help DCWD na ma sustain ni for the present and future generations,” DCWD spokesperson Jovana Cresta Duhaylungsod said in an interview.

The annual celebration began in 2001 in Davao City. It teaches the younger generation about the importance of water supply and supports DCWD’s efforts to ensure reliable water service.

Ten partner agencies were also invited to the convention to support the sustainability of climate-resilient water service.

Duhaylungsod shared that although DCWD has accomplished the abundance of water supply, climate-resilient infrastructures, and the provision of safe potable water, the challenge that the agency faces right now is sustaining the water that the residents enjoy.

“And that’s the reason why wala ta nag hunong og develop, ug additional pa na mga sources, and to improve our operation efficiency para ma lessen tung mga ma sayang na tubig due to non-revenue water. And also mapadayon na ma pa improve nato ang water supply service sa atong customers,” she said.

She added that Davao City was spared the effects of El Niño due to its service water and groundwater while most of the cities and municipalities faced problems with water supply availability.

DCWD will still guarantee its water services to its customers with surplus ground water that they can readily operate in times of the heavy rainfall season.

The 2024 Water Convention also acts as a culmination of the activities that DCWD conducted with the participating students. Activities include tours of the watershed project sites, and output videos that promote DCWD’s campaign on watershed protection and rehabilitation.
