A MAN was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman in a passenger jeepney in Barangay Bago Aplaya near Erico Nograles National High School around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, 2025.
According to the victim, identified as Alyza, 19, the suspect, Renz, 26, boarded the same jeepney and suddenly began choking her.
Concerned citizens intervened and apprehended the suspect, who sustained injuries during the incident.
He is currently in police custody and will undergo a medical examination.
The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) clarified that the incident was not a hostage-taking situation as initially reported.
“The suspect, who recently lost his spouse and has two young children, [may have been experiencing emotional distress due to] unemployment,” said Captain Hazel Caballero, spokesperson of the DCPO. “While his actions are inexcusable, it’s important to consider his mental state at the time of the incident.”
Caballero said they would file a physical injury charge against the suspect.
