DCPO chief pledges justice for woman killed by officer

ACTING police director Colonel Hansel Marantan has vowed justice for the family of a woman fatally shot by a police officer in Barangay Indangan on Aug. 7.

The victim, Justine May Villaroja, was killed during an argument with Patrolman Alvin John Tayamin, who was off-duty and had been drinking at the time.

Tayamin immediately surrendered after the incident and is now in custody, facing murder charges.

Marantan expressed his deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family.

“I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident where a police officer resorted to using his firearm against a civilian. I extend my heartfelt apologies to the victim’s family for this tragic event,” Marantan said.

He assured them that a thorough investigation is underway and that appropriate charges would be filed against the officer.

“While initial indications suggest a personal matter was involved, this in no way justifies the loss of a civilian life,” Marantan said in a statement. “I am committed to ensuring that justice is served for the victim and their loved ones.”

“I have directed the station commander of Mandug to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the case and ensure that appropriate charges are filed against the officer,” he further said.

“To the grieving family, please accept our sincere condolences. I am committed to ensuring that justice is served for the victim and their loved ones,” the city police director said.

Police said jealousy is believed to be the motive behind the killing.

Captain Hazel Tuazon, the spokesperson for the Davao City Police Office, confirmed that Tayamin’s issued firearm was used in the attack.

The victim’s body has been taken to Rivera Funeral Parlor, and the police are preparing to file a murder case against the suspect.
