When a tropical depression arrives in the middle of a pandemic, the city is expected to take extra measures.
During the Davao City Disaster Radio on Sunday evening, Mayor Inday Sara Duterte advised residents to be ready.
“We prepare our homes, place important appliances on higher ground, secure our valuables, and bring out our flashlights and Go bags,” she said.
Tropical depression “Ambo” is the country’s first storm this year. According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, Ambo is expected to bring scattered light to moderate and with occasional heavy rains over Davao, Caraga region, Socsksargen, and Maguindanao.
A 25-year-old student from Sultan Kudarat said she was stranded in the city. Although she had the option to go home, she decided to stay due to poor Internet connection in her town.
When asked about preparations she made for the storm, the student said, “I already bought my stocks good for two weeks the other day. Well, I guess that’s one way to prepare. Other than that, I really don’t know.”
Lara Lahain, 22, from Iligan City, thought she would still work at her office and got stranded in the city. Lara is worried about the storm since she mainly relies on delivery services.
“I’m concerned that these services may be discontinued due to the storm. However, I have taken the time to stock up on basic necessities. I’m hoping that this will be enough for the time being.” Lara said.
On the eastern seaboards of Caraga, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental, moderate to rough seas will be experienced. It is advisable that fishermen and those with small seacraft do not venture out on these coasts.
Residents in these areas are advised to take appropriate action, particularly those living in highly susceptible to flooding and rain-induced landslides. (Tobe Toral/ADDU Intern)
