Davao del Sur police seize ₱2.25-M in smuggled cigarettes; arrest rape suspect

A POLICE operation targeting a statutory rape suspect led to the unexpected seizure of over ₱2 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in Astorga, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

On Jan. 5, 2025, authorities successfully apprehended alias Badi. During the arrest, operatives noticed an individual stacking boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes near a residential road.

Upon inspection, the individual failed to present proper documentation for the 2,500 reams of cigarettes estimated to be worth ₱2,250,000.

Both individuals are now in custody at the Sta. Cruz Municipal Police Station. Authorities prepared the charges against Badi for statutory rape and against the second individual for violating Republic Act 10643 (The Graphic Health Warnings Law) and Republic Act 12022 (The Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act).

The confiscated cigarettes were turned over to the Regional Special Operations Group for documentation and disposal.

Brig. Gen. Leon Victor Rosete, regional director of the Police Regional Office XI, commended the vigilance of the RSOG and Sta. Cruz Municipal Police personnel.

“Their dedication and proactive response not only resulted in the successful arrest of a wanted individual but also dealt a significant blow to the illicit cigarette trade in the region,” he said.

“By removing illicit goods from circulation, authorities aim to create a fair business environment for legitimate enterprises and ensure public access to safe and regulated products,” he added.
