Davao City athletes bring home 102 medals from BIMP-EAGA+ NT Friendship Games

DAVAO CITY athletes who represented the country brought home 82 medals from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) + Northern Territory (NT) Friendship Games from Nov. 30 to Dec. 5.

The city was chosen, along with other cities, to represent the Philippines as PH Team A delegation in the annual week-long friendship games held this year at Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Of the 102 medals, delegates secured 31 gold medals, 39 silvers, and 22 bronze and emerged as overall champion. Malaysia B finished second with 17-16-19, followed by Indonesia with 14-8-6.  

Meanwhile, PH-E placed fourth with 13-8-11, followed by PH- B (6-6-10), Brunei Darussalam (3-2-8), Malaysia A (2-4-3), PH Team C (1-3-4), and PH Team D (1-2-10).

Davao City’s swimming team brought home the most medals, with 19 golds, 16 silvers, and 18 bronze.

Kristine Abdul Mercado, the committee on youth and sports development chairperson, passed a resolution during the 20th city council’s first regular session for 2025 on Tuesday, Jan. 6 recognizing the athletes.

“The achievements of these athletes and coaches not only reflect their personal dedication and hard work but also showcase the City of Davao’s commitment to excellence in sports and its contribution to strengthening regional ties and cooperation through the BIMP-EAGA+NT initiative,” Mercado said in her privilege speech.

“The City of Davao takes great pride in the accomplishments of its athletes and coaches, whose outstanding performance has brought honor to our city and to the Philippines as a whole,” she stressed.

A total of 110 athletes and coaches from the city competed in the various games: athletics, archery, badminton, e-sports, karatedo, sepak takraw, swimming, and Pencak Silat.
