THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA) XI already started adopting intervention mechanisms for the durian industry as the country transitions from El Niño to La Niña.
During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas at Cinema 6, SM Lanang, DA XI regional executive director Macario D. Gonzaga said they have adequate funding to support the durian growers if they sustain production losses due to extreme weather changes.
He further noted the need for increased production and interventions to ensure Davao durian farmers benefit from high demand and prices.
John Paul Matuginas, High-Value Crops Development Program focal person, said the intervention includes training on irrigation sites to mitigate the effects of La Niña on local durian production.
“For our durian industry po, we [are] continuously supporting po our farmers, our farms, through the provision of fertilizer, as well as technical supports, and other post-harvest machinery and equipment to continue their production,” he said.
Moreover, Matuginas said they are actively collaborating with industry stakeholders, especially the Durian Industry Association of Davao, to enhance the quality of their exports.
He added that the Durian season is expected to be favorable during August or September, particularly during the Kadayawan.
