CSWDO: More school supplies donations needed for fire victims

THE CITY Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) on Monday called for more donations for the Barangay 2-A fire victims, especially school supplies to be distributed to the affected students.

CSWDO head Julie Dayaday said apart from food, water, clothing, and hygiene kits, school supplies are needed as the opening of the school year 2023-2024 is approaching.

As of July 14, 8:25 p.m., CSWDO reported 165 total families affected, equivalent to 487 individuals.

“We will put up a donation drive in Rizal Park, we need hygiene kits, and water as they will have to stay longer in evacuation centers. Also, maybe we can provide school supplies for the children,” Dayaday told reporters after the flag ceremony.

For the donations guide, the total number of dependents is 294 where nine are infants (0-2), nine are aged 3-4; 33 (5-11); 46 (12-17). Meanwhile, there are 207 adults (18-59) and eight senior citizens.

The affected families were provided modular tents and are temporarily housed in Magallanes Elementary School-covered court.

Apart from tents, the city also provides for their needs such as food and non-food, hygiene kits, medical, and relief goods.

Marlou De Asis, Magallanes Elementary School principal, told the reporters on Monday they are willing to assist the affected families as most of the students affected attend their school.

De Asis said they could not ascertain how long the fire victims will stay but the school is open to shelter them temporarily.

The principal said affected students will be given special consideration and placed under the distanced learning modality to prevent learning disruption.

In the meantime, the teachers will provide modules for the students while in their evacuation centers.

De Asis shared that talks with the barangay chairman are ongoing, to fast-track the relocation of the affected as soon as possible.

“Hopefully, the city government will assist with the relocation so that the affected will move if possible, in preparation for the school for upcoming classes,” De Asis said.

The office logged 61 totally damaged houses, with an estimated cost of P23,749,800. Of the number, 61 were house owners, 22 sharers, 45 renters, 33 boarders, and three caretakers.

CSWDO will also assist with the family’s burial expenses of the two PWD boys aged 11 and 14 trapped in the fire, the only casualties from the fire that quickly escalated to a third alarm.
