COUNCILOR Bai Hundra Cassandra Dominique Advincula emphasized the rights and responsibilities of employers in the wake of the report of a missing house help employed by a police officer.
Advincula, chairman of the committee on labor, referred to Republic Act Number 10361 or Batas Kasambahay, which provides the rights and obligations of employers and house helpers.
It means that domestic workers have the right to be given decent work, a safe environment, and fair compensation or wages.
It is also appropriate to provide humane working conditions, as well as give access to social protections such as PhilHealth, Social Security System (SSS), and Pag-Ibig.
She also said each helper has the right to quit their job if they feel uncomfortable with their working conditions.
“There is also a need to educate and campaign kung unsa naka loob sa Kasambahay Law, so pwede sila makaduol sa DOLE kung naa mga kondisyon sa work kung naa ginabuhat saila if they feel that their safety are threatened pwede sila makaduol,” Advincula told reporters on Tuesday.
“So far, no concerns have been raised regarding the Kasambahay Law implementation if it is being followed by the employer and employees,” she added.
On the part of the local government unit, its main role is to facilitate the house helpers to provide the necessary services offered by the government such as the agency of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Labor and Employment, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Department of Education, and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).
The City Investigation and Detection Management Unit has been tasked to investigate the case of Justine Mae Saldua, a resident of Barangay Upper Ulip, Monkayo, Davao de Oro, who was reported missing by her family.
She was employed by Toril Police Station commander Major Michael Uyanguren, who was removed from his post to avoid influencing the investigation and witnesses.
