A city councilor is pushing to declare all parks, monuments, archways, and markers in the city as historical landmarks.
Councilor Pilar Braga, committee chair on education, science and technology, arts and culture, has filed the proposed ordinance aiming to protect, preserve and conserve the public spots.
The proposal is pursuant to the Republic Act No. 10066, otherwise known as the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, that provides for the protection and conservation of the national cultural heritage.
Winnie Rose Bulig, the acting administrative officer of the city-run Museo Dabawenyo, wrote a letter to Councilor Braga for the crafting of the ordinance declaring the historical landmarks in the city.
Based on the proposal that was passed on first reading last session, the Office of the City Mayor, through the Museo Dabawenyo, submitted last Jan. 17 the list of the Philippine Registry of Cultural Property such as parks, monuments, landmarks archways and markers in the city to the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA).
Based on the draft ordinance, it noted that most of the historic pre-war houses owned by prominent families that settled in Davao City are now turned into commercial establishments.
The proposed law aims to protect similar structures from unlawful and destructive activities through imposing stringent measures.
