City suffers floods but no evacuations needed

Some low-lying areas experienced floods but the City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office has not monitored any evacuations following the heavy downpour on Tuesday night.

CDRRMO chief Alfredo Baloran, in a phone interview on Wednesday, said water rose in areas around SM Ecoland, going to Indonesia Consulate, Sabroso compound in Antorium Street, Bucana, and SIR in Barangay 76-A, Davao City Overland Transport Terminal going to Highway Patrol Group, and some streets in the downtown area.

“We don’t implement preemptive evacuation because what we experienced is only street flooding, especially in those areas frequently experienced floodings in the downtown area, ” Baloran said.

“Last night we just monitored those families affected in terms of water entering their houses,” he said.

Baloran said the residents only secured their furniture, appliances, and belongings to prevent them from getting soaked.

On areas near the Highway Patrol Group, he said that there used to be a creek there, which overflows when it rains. However, the city engineers already have a plan on how to mitigate flooding and protect the residents.

Meanwhile, Baloran advised residents in low-lying areas or living along the riverbanks to be vigilant since the country is already in the wet season. Also, the weather bureau has issued an advisory on localized thunderstorms that result in moderate to heavy rains.
