THE CITY Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) kick-started its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Course for the public sector at Ritz Hotel on Sept. 13.
The three-day training, from Sept. 13 to 15, seeks to foster the relevant knowledge, abilities, and attitudes needed for government employees to assist in implementing Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) disciplines in their respective offices.
CDRRMO head Alfredo Baloran said in an interview with the City Information Office that the essential part of the training is how participants manage anticipated disasters in the city.
“With these trainings, hopefully, these participants will become part of the disaster action team of their respective offices,” Baloran said.
Baloran said the participants are expected to take a more active role in the DRRM culture of their workplace and are encouraged to share learned training with their co-workers.
Over 50 individuals representing 22 offices from the local government unit are participating in the training course.
Speakers from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Department of Health (DOH) will be giving lectures on hydromet hazards, earthquake and volcanic hazards, rain-induced landslide and subsidence, climate change, and basic first aid.
Technical knowledge of DRRM will also be imparted by the CDRRMO by providing lectures on how to organize disaster control groups and the use of an incident command system in the workplace.
An introductory lecture on the Philippine DRRM System and the city’s Public Service Continuity Plan are also included in the course.
An evacuation drill simulation at the end of the training will be used to assess how effective the course was among the participants.
