THE PHILIPPINE Navy’s Pohang-class corvette, BRP Conrado Yap (PS30), arrived in Eastern Mindanao on Tuesday, Oct. 27, boosting the region’s maritime security posture and territorial defense capabilities.

The deployment strengthens the operational fleet of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM) as it sustains maritime patrols, protects vital sea lanes, and safeguards the country’s maritime domain across its area of responsibility.

Measuring 88.3 meters in length, BRP Conrado Yap is a specialized surface combatant equipped with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities.

The vessel serves as a key platform for high-level naval maneuvers and specialized training to enhance officer and crew proficiency in ASW operations.

Formerly operated by the Republic of Korea Navy, the corvette was officially commissioned into the Philippine Navy on Aug. 5, 2019.

The ship is named in honor of Capt. Conrado D. Yap, a Philippine Army officer and Medal for Valor recipient recognized for extraordinary heroism during the Korean War.

In a statement, NFEM commander Commodore Joel R. Tamayo emphasized that integrating PS30 into the command’s regional operations aligns with the Navy’s broader mandate to maintain a credible maritime defense presence and safeguard national interests in Eastern Mindanao waters.
