Big Bad Wolf’s road to 1 million new readers

ONE MILLION new readers for the Philippines will be targeted as part of this year’s Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Davao 2024, which will launch from Nov. 22 to Dec. 1 at the Azuela Cove.

During a press conference, Big Bad Wolf managing partner Carolyn Chuaying said they hope to encourage people to start reading books again.

“We really want to drive more education and reading further because we really want to see changed lives, especially for the Filipinos. We really want to see lives change and transform,” Chuaying said.

According to a survey by the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the adult readership is at 42% while children are at 47% in 2023 showing a readership decline among Filipinos compared to a 2017 survey that peaked at 80% among adults and 93% among children.

The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Davao 2024, In its fourth time in Davao City, will feature over 2 million books with a variety of different genres and up to 95% discount on all new books.

In an interview with Big Bad Wolf co-founder Jacqueline Ng highlighted that Big Bad Wolf’s main goal is changing lives through books, especially in places where reading culture does not exist and she believes in building a new generation of readers.

Ng acknowledges the challenges in organizing large-scale book sales such as logistics being the major problem with containers that are much less, being delayed, and costly. Other concerns including inflation on high rising costs also pose a challenge for the Big Bad Wolf.
