IGDD: Economic abuse tops VAW reported cases

THE CITY’S Integrated Gender Development Division (IGDD) reported that economic abuse topped the cases reported to the office in 2024.

While the data showed that economic abuse declined, it constantly remained on top according to the IGDD 2023-2024 comparative report.

The office logged 976 reported cases of economic abuse in 2024, a 32.18% decrease from 1439 in 2023.

“Reflective siya nga naga krisis diay ang mga tao, in crisis kulang ang kwarta, walay mga trabaho ang mga babae ug daghan ang nangundang sa trabaho,” IGDD head Lorna Mandin said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday.

Mandin added that women continue to suffer economic concerns primarily in the lack of job opportunities for them.

“Sa economic, i-review or i-expand ang mga services para mas molahotay ang mga negosyo sa mga babae ug mas mahatagan siya og opportunities,” she stressed.

On the other hand, the rest of the other forms of abuse increased, such as physical abuse (from 463 in 2023 to 469 in 2024) and psychological/emotional abuse (from 755 in 2023 to 851 in 2024).

The office also observed an 80% increase in sexual abuse from 50 in 2023 to 90 in 2024.

Other cases reported to IGDD which were not observed in 2023 but were present in 2024 included adultery (four cases); concubinage (two), sextortion (two), legal separation, and case repatriation; and one each for adoption, and physical injury.

Mandin said this can be attributed to increased awareness and accessibility of women on their rights and services of the government.

The official added they are continuously working with other government agencies to track the cases and provide appropriate intervention

The Violence Against Women Tracking System was launched during the 114th International Women’s Day celebration on March 8, 2024.

The tracking system is a data management system created to consolidate, record, track, and monitor real-time updates of VAW cases to unify the cases and prevent duplication.

The system features a color coding scheme to indicate the service the client needs, whether legal, psychosocial, or financial assistance.

Data integration from Davao City Police Office (DCPO), the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), and the Department of Education Davao City Division to consolidate the reported VAW cases is underway.
