CAgrO expects 500k tilapia fingerlings produced this year

THE CITY Agricultural Office (CAgrO) said the city-owned tilapia hatchery is expected to produce about 500,000 hatchlings this year, to further support the increasing fish supply in the city.

In an interview, Aimee Evora, CAgrO’s Fishery Resources Management Services Division head, said the fingerlings expected to be produced next month will benefit 600 fishermen, each receiving 500 to 1,000 pieces of tilapia fingerlings.

“So anytime nga ang atoang mga fish farmers mu-request, naa nata dayo’y mahatag nga fingerlings. Ang amoang purpose ato maka-produce nata’g sarili nato nga fingerlings nga di nata mu-agad og procurement,” Evora said.

Last year, CAgrO disseminated 155,000 tilapia, 55,000 catfish (hito), distributed in each district across Davao City, and 20,000 milkfish (bangus) fingerlings, which were given to fish cage operators in Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya.

“Nakatabang ni siya in terms sa food security, especially sa mga upland districts nato, layo baya ila’ng area sa isda sa dagat so ang main source nila sa fish kay fish pond. Dako ni siyang tabang sa ilaha kay makabuhi naman sila [og isda] within sa ilahang area,” Evora added.

She added that the office intends to continue with its training program this year, teaching farmers how to make their own fish food utilizing locally available ingredients to lessen cost.
