  • Davao City recognized in Numbeo Southeast Asia survey

DAVAO City ranked as the second cleanest city in Southeast Asia, 2024 Mid-Year Numbeo Pollution Index rankings revealed.

The city recorded a pollution index score of 55.6, trailing just Singapore, which scored 32.5.

It surpassed other major cities in the SEA region belonging to the Top 5, namely Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (65.4), Bandung, Indonesia (67.9), and Baguio City, Philippines (72.9).

Meanwhile, among the major cities in the country, Davao also outperformed Cebu City which ranked 10th with 84.0, and Manila which placed 14th with 89.8 pollution index.

Pollution Index provides an estimation of overall pollution levels in cities considering factors such as air and water pollution, garbage disposal, cleanliness, noise and light pollution, green spaces, and comfort in relation to pollution.

Air pollution is assigned the highest weight in the index followed by water pollution and accessibility, which are considered the two primary pollution factors, while other types receive a smaller weight in the index.

In a press statement, the Hugpong sa  Tawong Lungsod, with its secretary general Mayor Sebastian Duterte, said the recognition is a manifestation of the “collective discipline and commitment” of Davaoeños.

The collaborative efforts of Dabawenyos, under the leadership of local officials, have made Davao a model city for cleanliness and livability not only in the Philippines but also across Southeast Asia,” it added.

It stressed the culture of responsibility and discipline guided by the “Basta Dabawenyo, DCplinado” principle that made the city a “model city” not only in the country but in Southeast Asia as well.
