Elderly pedestrian killed Calinan vehicular incident

A 78-YEAR-OLD man was killed in a road incident along the Davao-Bukidnon Highway in front of the 1st Valley Bank in Calinan Poblacion around 5:50 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27.

The police identified the victim as Jose Luis Gonzales Piccio, a resident of Delara Street in Calinan, who was reportedly crossing the highway when he was hit by a Toyota Lite Ace utility vehicle.

The driver, 24-year-old Liewel, a resident of Barangay Pampanga, Davao City, was traveling from Barangay Riverside toward Barangay Lacson.

According to an initial investigation, the driver, who holds a valid driver’s license, might have been driving recklessly. He and his vehicle are currently being held at the police station for proper disposition and further investigation.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Captain Hazel Tuazon, the DCPO spokesperson, said the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during early morning hours when visibility might be limited.

Pedestrians are also reminded to be vigilant when crossing roads and to use designated crosswalks whenever possible.
