Hostage drama at Digos jail resolved; BJMP personnel, child injured

THE HOSTAGE situation at the Digos City District Jail-Male Dormitory in Barangay San Miguel, Digos City, was successfully resolved on Sunday after a two-hour standoff, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) XI reported on Monday.

The incident occurred at noon in the visitation area.

Three persons deprived of liberty (PDL)s, identified as Shelly Salda, Jobert Masday, and Dante Pindaton, armed with improvised bladed weapons, took two children, ages 10 and 6, hostage during a contact visitation.

The PDLs then isolated themselves inside a marked BJMP vehicle with the children.

After two hours of intense negotiations, during which authorities met the suspects’ demands, the BJMP Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Assault Team launched a rescue operation.

The team had been closely monitoring the situation outside the jail compound gates, awaiting an opportunity to intervene.

During the operation, the three PDLs, two children, and four members of the BJMP STAR team sustained injuries. All were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The BJMP XI is committed to enforcing stricter security protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within its facilities.

Further details will be released as the investigation continues.
