Fisherman rescued after drifting off Davao Occidental waters due to fuel shortage

A 61-YEAR-OLD fisherman was rescued at 8:50 p.m. on Sept. 13 after his fishing boat ran out of fuel and drifted in the waters of Davao Occidental.

Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao spokesperson Lt. Commander Angel Tobias said the incident began on September 12th, 2024, when Wilfredo Galoran, a resident of Purok 3, Barangay Aplaya, Digos City, Davao del Sur, was fishing near the waters of Digos.

Around 4 a.m., his fishing boat ran out of fuel, leaving him stranded and drifting towards the waters of Brgy Ogpao, Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental.

Mr. Galoran was able to secure his boat to a fish aggregating device (payao) in the area.

He remained there until 3 p.m. on Sept. 13th, 2024, when passing fishermen found him and brought him safely to the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Sta. Maria.

The Coast Guard provided assistance, gathered information about Galoran’s situation, and contacted his family. He was picked up from the substation around 8:50 p.m. that same evening.

CGSS Sta. Maria also advised him to ensure sufficient fuel before any future fishing trips.
