Elderly woman dies after fatal hit on crosswalk; SUV driver nabbed

A 77-YEAR-OLD woman died while recuperating at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) after being struck by an SUV while crossing a pedestrian lane along Daang Maharlika Highway on Monday afternoon.

The victim, identified by the police as alias Petra, a resident of Villa De Davao Townhouse in Barangay Vicente Hizon Sr., was reportedly hit by a Montero Sport driven by alias Jocel, 32, of Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, Captain Hazel Caballero, the spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said the traffic investigator confirmed that the victim died.

According to a report from authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. on June 2, 2025, in front of BDO Lanang. 

Initial investigation revealed that the victim was crossing the pedestrian lane while another vehicle had stopped to allow her to cross. However, the Montero Sport, traveling from north to south in the innermost lane, struck her on her left side, causing her to fall and sustain injuries.

Central 911 received a call about the vehicular incident at 3:36 p.m. 

Responding officers, including PSSg Claro and PCpl Peralta of the Mobile Patrol Unit, along with CTTMO personnel, were already at the scene managing traffic. 

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) were observed providing first aid to Ms. Petra, who was found lying on the ground. A Central 911 ambulance (body number A-01) transported the victim to the SPMC for immediate medical attention.

The driver, Ms. Jocel, and the vehicle were brought to the police station for documentation. 

Later that evening, at around 6:33 p.m., a relative of the victim appeared at the police station to claim Petra’s personal belongings and money. She also informed authorities that the victim was a widow with no children, and her siblings reside outside Davao City.
