THIRTEEN firearms were surrendered to the 33rd Infantry (Makabayan) Battalion headquarters in Barangay Zapakan, Radjah Buayan, Maguindanao del Sur, on Feb. 24, 2025.

The surrender of the weapons followed a Political Candidates Forum held for candidates running in the municipality of Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur.

According to Lt. Col. Udgie Villan, commander of the 33IB, Mayor Akmad “Butch” Ampatuan Jr. himself encouraged residents to surrender their loose firearms to help promote peace and security in their area.

Villan presented the 13 surrendered firearms, which included Cal .30 M1 Garand rifles, to Col. Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Brigade.

“The voluntary surrender of firearms is part of the government’s efforts under the Small Arms and Light Weapons Management Program to stop the proliferation of illegal weapons, dismantle armed groups, reduce crime and violence, and promote a culture of peace and security in the region,” Col. Catu stated.

The activity was attended by local officials, barangay captains, and representatives from Civil Society Organizations, the religious sector, and other stakeholders.

Brigadier General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central praised the initiative of the local government unit (LGU) of Mamasapano and the military’s continued efforts to dismantle illegal weapons in the region.

“By surrendering their weapons, the local officials and residents of Mamasapano are showing their support for a safe and peaceful election in 2025, as well as their trust in the government’s measures to maintain peace and order in the area,” Gumiran added.
