The city government is preparing P25 million to help those whose farms have been affected by the dry spell.
The amount will help those who have areas that are heavily affected and cannot be covered by crop insurance, the City Agriculturist Office (CAO).The CAO report that as of March, damage on agriculture was at about P24 million as the drought affected about 11,000 farmers.
Lorna Alderite, CAO senior agriculturist, said the agency has submitted its proposed intervention to the office of Mayor Sara Duterte for her approval.
Alderite said the agency has started compiling reports from 99 barangays with farms on the damages in their areas.
“We have already submitted reports but we need the barangay captains to submit their own reports so that Mayor Sara (Duterte) will approve the proposal,” she said.
She said the report will also become the basis for placing the state of calamity.
She added that affected farmers can also seek assistance from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. as the agency has started preparing payouts of about P420 million nationwide.
